Gifts: Received and Given
It is the first week of Advent and we are preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ, who is Emmanuel (God with us). It is a time of preparation and a time for joy as we remember the birth of our Savior, treasure His presence in our lives, and anticipate His coming again.
Often associated with this time of year is the giving of gifts to family, friends, and those in need. Gift giving and receiving is part of our cultural celebration of Christmas. We can view our faith as truly a gift – a gift of receptivity. We open ourselves to receive the gift of the Child, the Savior of the world. It is a gift bestowed upon us by a loving God; a gift that should be treasured always.
God’s gift of God’s-self, in Jesus Christ, is not merited on our part, but is freely given to us in love. As missionary disciples, we are called to share the precious gift of Christ with others. The gift freely given should be gratefully received and joyfully shared.
Advent provides us the time and opportunity to share the gift of faith with the same people to whom we give material gifts, our family, friends, and those in need. What a blessing to be able to share the gift of faith we have received through God’s mercy with others! It is truly the gift that keeps giving.
Wishing you a blessed Advent!
